Boundary Debates Leave 1969-70 Plans Unsettled

Lawrence district schools keep 497 capacity and 1969-70 boundaries but transfer and combination room policies stay unsettled after a 45 minute discussion. Overnight transfers face opposition from Dr Bradley with calls for 3 to 5 days notice. Portable classrooms approved if needed and South High homeroom options discussed alongside locker removals. The Brooks transfer request was denied. surplus portable buildings awarded to Coltrane for three temporary structures.

Extension of Surtax Urged as Budget Plan Faces Congress

Washington AP The Nixon administration told Congress extending the 10 percent surtax through 1969 and 5 percent to mid-1970 is needed to avoid inflation and a possible recession. Treasury Secretary Kennedy said without the extension the surplus would turn to a deficit, while the plan aims for a 6.3 billion dollar surplus starting July 1.

Apollo 10 Wives Praise Televised Team Show

Houston AP reports Apollo 10 wives praise the 24 minute TV segment featuring Tom Stafford John Young and Gene Cernan. They described the broadcast as clear and entertaining with a finale of Fly Me to the Moon and affectionate remarks about their husbands. Tracey Cernan enjoyed horse riding and rocket drawings as a child observer on the Moon mission day.

National Shut-In Day Observed in Lawrence

Police investigated two minor non-injury accidents on Monday and reports of two earlier campus mishaps on Friday and Saturday. Damages totaled under $90 in each case. Sunday, June 1, was designated National Shut-In Day with encouragement for cards visits and calls to remember those confined to homes or beds. Geraldine McDonald of Kansas City serves as the Kansas area representative for the project.

AEC says May 11 blaze in a Dow operated Rocky Flats production building near Golden may cost 40 to 50 million to restore. One firefighter exposed to radioactive material treated and released. Fire damages home of Frank Martin on Lawrence Avenue

An estimated 500 damage occurred at Frank Martin's home 926 Lawrence Ave about 7 p.m. Monday when an overheated pan of grease burst into flames. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and Martin reported he carries fire insurance.

Leary to Run for California Governor in 1970

Dr Timothy Leary former Harvard professor and LSD advocate says he will campaign for California governor in 1970 after the Supreme Court overturned his marijuana conviction. He plans to visit cities for a campaign kickoff in Los Angeles and to focus on reforming marijuana laws.

Knox Salary Continued and Staff Resignations Noted

The board accepted resignations of several administrators and teachers including Robert D. Ramsey and Mrs. Marilyn Brooks while authorizing rehiring of 51 clerical staff six teacher aides 75 food service workers 41 operation and maintenance personnel and 13 building grounds staff. Non teaching workers receive merit based pay under minimum wage limits from 1.30 to 1.45 per hour with some increases.
