Allied forces prepare for a renewed German offensive as American troops surge into France. Coordinated efforts and intensive training are strengthening the allied position for what authorities anticipate as a major drive.
Reports say heavy firing in the Arras and Albert sectors, northern Somme line. London notes increased German artillery between Albert and Buquieres, while the German statement claims British guns active along the entire Albert Arras front under heavy fire.
German troops, battered in Picardy and Flanders, hold back for recovery before renewed large scale action. Analysts expect a aim to split Allied lines by attacking supply routes near Layon and Rheims while extending the front south and east. Americans, coordinating with French and British forces, show thorough organization and growing formations in northern France as training and depots expand.
London May 20 A calm summer night lured German planes toward the metropolis. The defense fired almost continuously for over two hours with severe bombardment. Four raiders were shot down while several bombs were dropped and the total enemy count remained unclear.
Maj Raoul Lufbery of the American flying corps has been killed and will be buried with full military honors tomorrow in France with both American and French troops taking part. Lufbery hailed from Wallingford Connecticut.
The Washington casualty list dated May 20 reports 45 names with 7 killed in action 1 died of wounds 1 died of accident 5 died of disease 27 wounded severely and 2 wounded slightly.

A mangled Ford owned by Deak McKone of Phi Delta Theta collided with a Marmon owned by Charles J. Achning on Seventh and Tennessee streets. McKone Joe Swartz and Harry Walker were injured with McKone and Swartz hospitalized. others escaped serious harm as the Ford door and running gear were badly damaged and a telephone post was struck.
School children from High School Intermediate New York Lincoln McAllaster Tinckney Gordie Lincoln and Woodlawn gathered on Ninth street between Massachusetts and Vermont this afternoon to sing for the Red Cross drive. The procession formed from Massachusetts street and turned onto Ninth street with groups from New York Lincoln McAllaster Woodlawn High School Cordley Intermediate and Pinckney. Miss Kennedy arranged the singing and Mr Jaggard assisted with placements.
A flat copper piece six inches square with a cavity sealed by solder was found by workers at the Gibson Snail Companies dump. Fear of bombs led authorities to inspect it at the University. The cavity would hold about an ounce of explosive, suggesting limited danger. It may have been placed there or washed from the river bed.
A Nebraska cyclone hit Bloomfield Saturday night killing 12 people and injuring 25. The dead include Mrs. Herman Hayes, two Frederikson children, five Spinner children, and a Pieper farm child. Officials fear the toll will rise as details emerge.
Hogs found infected in a herd near the corner of Second and North streets in North Lawrence. Douglas County Farm Bureau notified and prompt containment measures are underway. Visitors H M Waring of Kansas City and J B Blazen of Wichita were in the city briefly.
Ink. C. Stokes was arrested last month charged with violating the Espionage Act.
Mrs Rose Pastor Stokes wife of J Phelps Stokes wealthy New York Socialist faced a federal espionage trial in Kansas City on three counts. US Attorney Francis M Wilson prepared the case. Indicted April 23 the trial began May 2 with witnesses from Camp Funston. Stokes pleaded not guilty and bonds were set at 10000 dollars. Seymour Stedman of Chicago was retained to defend her.
Lawrence high school chapel program conducted by Washington Post of the G A R showcased a renewed patriotic spirit since America entered the war. Civil War veterans attended and spoke alongside professors and teachers. Songs included The Battle Hymn of the Republic and Anneries.
At about 2 AM Sunday a break in at Barber Son drug store was detected by night watchman James Monroe. Thieves used a rasp to force the rear door, stealing fifty cents in pennies and calomel and strychnine tablets. Jars knocked over suggested fear of noise. burglars likely sought cocaine and morphine tablets.
Captain Charles J Biddle of Andalusia Georgia a leader in the Lafayette Squadron was recently reported missing after a fight with German forces. French scouts located him in No Man's Land with a bullet wound in the head and he was brought to a rear hospital for treatment.
Babe Ruth star pitcher for the Boston American League club was overcome yesterday while on the way to Fenway Park and was taken to a hospital where physicians said he is suffering with an acute throat affliction.
A call emphasizes that every cent donated next week to the Red Cross will go directly to national relief work with no deduction for expenses, transferring the money straight from donors to the soldiers in need.

He warned that life is not measured by votes or public office and urged adopting a soldierly spirit amid war’s horrors. He criticized Central Powers and warned tyranny, noting deeper life lies beyond fashion and wealth, while the crowded building listened to his message.

The longtime editor of the Public Record, Emma J. Aldrich of Cawker City, died this morning after thirty-five years in journalism. She planned to attend the G A E convention in Chanute, having served as Kansas Women's Republicans federation president and a charter member of The corps. She devoted herself to preserving town history and serving the community. During her tenure she led the paper past fourteen competitors.
Washington Post of G A R furnishes accommodations through Captain L D Dobbs of the National Military Home at Leavenworth who is a member of the Grand Army. Delegates and visitors of the Chanute Encampment of the I A Ry will have headquarter space in Chanute at 318 Main street. Dobbs announced the provision during a visit to Lawrence. W Kleihge visited his mother in Kinsley today.
An enthusiastic Douglas County meeting with the Food Administration formed a committee to set threshing prices. Elmer Allen of Eudora heads a group from townships including Wakaran, Kanwaka, and Baldwin to report back at a follow up session. They noted threshers have long endured the same rate, now urging a price increase to reflect labor and rising yields.
Elwin W. Tallinger, KU 1917 graduate and former Kansan editor, will be sent to London as a representative of United Press. He previously led the Uni Press Bureau in Detroit after stints in Chicago. Tallinger, active in journalism at KU, left for Columbia University to finish his work.
