The drive out took three days while the return home stretched to six due to high Illinois river conditions forcing a detour through St Louis adding 300 miles. His car skidded into a ditch near Tonganoix waiting in the rain until help arrived. He left Mrs Lause and their small son in Dayton with her parents for a longer visit.
