Camden South Carolina May 18 The Cleveland school fire killed seventy three people according to a corrected list as rescuers worked through the night. The blaze followed an oil lamp explosion triggering a crowd surge and a collapsed stairway trapping and burning students and adults.
The article argues a chamber requires a large representative membership to function properly. It stresses cooperation with local government, inclusion of doctors preachers and teachers, and that education and health shape community well being. The piece advocates broad civic participation.
Arrangements are under way to entertain the state convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lawrence on June 2 at the local headquarters. Arbuthnot as first vice president, C. W. Brown as second vice president, John Schmittert as treasurer, and Dean L. Sayre as librarian.

Houston reports two injured when a miniature cyclone struck Oualline Mills near Conroe forty miles north of Houston early today. Beaumont records a 6 to 9 am downpour with 10.65 inches in three hours flooding streets. Communication with Beaumont was cut off by a cloud burst affecting roads and regional transit.
Saturday noon is the deadline for regular students at the University to register for the summer session. George O. Foster, registrar, says many are registering this week. Late enrollment incurs a fee, and K U regular students pay incidental fees only, with a new athletic coaching class feature this year.
Miss May Gardner of the University faculty will spend next year in Madrid Spain as the official representative of the American International Institute League and director of the International Institute for Girls. Under her direction will be three American teachers and several Spanish teachers. She will sail in August after the University summer session and remain abroad for one year.
Miss Laurette Peters of Buffalo New York leaves this morning after visiting her aunt Mrs William Schulz. She will meet her uncle Dr C V Y Pease in Chicago and then go on to Boston.

George Lamb a senior in the engineering school at the University of Chicago will serve ninety days in the county jail and pay a 250 dollar fine for possession of intoxicating liquor. He was found guilty by a district court jury and sentenced by Judge Means. The State dropped the sale charge. the nuisance charge was not included in the verdict. The jury age was 4:14 to 5:00 yesterday afternoon. The court recessed until Monday at 9.00.
Two explosions struck U S government premises in Mexico City in May. The embassy blast wounded no one and caused no damage, while a later blast at the consulate building likewise caused no damage. No arrests were reported.
Lloyd Roberts a senior from Winfield slipped from a third story fire escape at 1215 Dread Avenue and fell to the ground. He was taken to Memorial hospital with bruises and facial injuries but doctors say the injuries are painful yet not serious.
Major and Mrs Norris of the divisional Salvation Army staff in Kansas City will conduct special services in Lawrence over the weekend. The first service is Saturday night with two more on Sunday at the Salvation Army chapel and outdoor services planned with addresses announced.

About 300 Ku Klux Klan members staged a parade in Oxford Kansas twelve miles east of Wellington. Sheriff Fred Valerius of Sumner County stopped the masked display insisting robes and masks be removed. The march resumed unmasked and ended with cheers as the group disappeared. The sheriff called it Sumner County’s first Klan parade and vowed no future masked demonstrations.
A Topeka Capital cartoon depicts A. B. Carney from the board trying a straw hat labeled Pittsboro Normal. Carney, an educator, has been involved with several central Kansas schools and is rumored as a candidate for president of a Kansas normal school.
D W Harless, 46, shot and instantly killed himself on the street in front of his Wichita home. Health reported as the motive for the act just before he was to join a Shriner parade. TE Stine now drives a Chevrolet Coupe.
The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce launches a six day campaign starting Monday night to recruit 600 memberships. Key figures from Topeka and Kansas City will address workers as sixteen Kansas City Kans. Chamber members join Tuesday for luncheon. The drive funds operating costs and a responsive program for city growth.
W A McKeever leads a Chicago American backed campaign to find a better city. The paper will award a 1100 prize next year to the Chicago area community judged best for fostering a new generation and culture.
Topeka Kansas is selected as the meeting place for next year by North America health officials and by the state health officers. The decision follows regional health discussions and sets Topeka as the host city for the annual gathering.
Moscow blames Switzerland for the murder of M. Vorovsky in Lausanne. Foreign Minister Tchitcherin states Swiss officials failed to guard the Soviet representative, citing alleged negligence.
Governor Jonathan M. Davis reportedly sought the resignation of Dr. Crumbine after nineteen years as secretary of the state board of health. Crumbine refused to resign when asked to dismiss the board’s employer and appoint administration-approved replacements. University officials say the governor’s move should not affect his faculty role at the University school of medicine.
County engineer E R Trueblood delayed finishing Baldwin Hill survey due to heavy rain. He outlines two routes with grades of 10 percent over 1800 feet and 6 percent along the hill, involving cuts and fills and land purchase. Commissioners will review the surveys before any further action.
Ralph Lawrence deputy sheriff trusted his car to chase bandits on the Lawrence Baldin road. In a heavy rain the vehicle shed a wheel, as W H Mehicone and Harris Vollock testified. The trio were stranded and walked to Baldwin.

Washington May 18. Minister Schurman said talks between bandit leaders and Chinese government representatives were advancing and prisoners could be freed within two or three days.
Phi Gamma Delta fraternity unveils its Tudor style home on Sixteenth Street overlooking the Kaw and Wakarusa valleys. Financed by alumni, the $100,000 project features four stories, a jinx room for dances, a large terrace, and a motherhouse suite for Mrs. Anna Cahill, with gifts including a Knabe grand piano from J. A. Phillips and others.
