Court ruling favors defendant in Louisiana insanity lawsuit
The Supreme Court ruled 5 4 that Louisiana improperly confined Terry Foucha in a mental facility after an insanity acquittal. The justices said he may not be held indefinitely for danger despite regained sanity, though immediate release was not clearly mandated. The decision narrows state power to detain acquittees and signals limited impacts elsewhere.
