County buys equipment for park

Douglas County Commission approves a 6963 dollar purchase of Broken Arrow Park playground equipment from Miracle Recreation to replace the rocket and slide. The rocket sells to Jerry Cole for 410 dollars and will be moved to Lake Dabinawa. New equipment will have two slides and two climbing spots and be shorter than the 27 foot rocket. Also approved are three dump trucks with spreaders and radios for 216500 dollars. Health insurance deductible may rise from 250 to 400 with report due Wednesday.

Pinckney seeks spot on historic register

About a dozen Pinckney homeowners plan to apply for inclusion on the Lawrence Register of Historic Places to bolster opposition to a power line project. Neighbors fear taller poles and larger diameters would harm property values and the neighborhood’s character.

Shelter to stay open despite low turnout

Salvation Army officials will keep the weekend homeless shelter open this summer near 46 N.H. after receiving a $22,260 state grant. Only five slept Friday and one Saturday night, far below the winter average of 33, with leaders citing late word and a still-weak turnout as factors.

Memorial Day office closures and pool hours in Lawrence

Local offices and city facilities will close for Memorial Day next Monday. Lawrence City Hall and the Douglas County Courthouse will be shut, as will the main post office and Jayhawk Station. Postal service will operate Express and Special Delivery only. Trash collection shifts and recreation center closures are noted. Municipal Pool opens Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and runs through Labor Day with summer hours. Public Library also closes Sunday and Monday.

Memorial Day Press Schedule Changes Across Institutions

The Journal-World will print early and be on racks by noon. USA Today will not publish on Monday. Arts Center, Ninth and Vermont, closes weekend and Monday. Lawrence schools and the administration center close Monday. KU administrative offices also close. Spencer Museum closes as usual. Museum of Anthropology opens 1 PM to 5 PM Monday. Museum of Natural History opens 1 PM to 5 PM Monday. Watson Library, Haskell College offices closed Monday.

Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 22 holds 9 a.m. service at Maple Grove Cemetery. Oak Hill Cemetery hosts 11 a.m. ceremony by American Legion Dorsey Liberty Post No. 14. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 852 convenes at 10 a.m. Memorial Park Cemetery. United Veterans Organizations of Douglas County and South Park flagpole ceremony begins 1 p.m. at East 15th Street. Vietnam and Pearl Gulf veterans are invited.

Shooting leaves Lawrence man in fair condition

A 20-year-old Lawrence man was shot in the ankle during a Saturday night fight with his 17-year-old brother-in-law at Green Acres Mobile Home Court. The teen allegedly retrieved a gun and fired twice, one bullet striking the victim. The juvenile was taken into custody. fate of his court appearance pending.
