Washington May 18 The Supreme Court ruled the Guffey coal act unconstitutional in a six to three decision led by Justice Sutherland. The court said price fixing provisions depended on labor provisions and could not stand alone. Chief Justice Hughes and Justices Cardozo Brandeis and Stone dissented in part. The ruling cited interstate commerce limits and improper delegation of power affecting wages and hours. Proponents argued authority via interstate commerce regulation. opponents claimed local production limits violated NRA precedent.
The North Lawrence city council calls a special meeting at 8 tonight to consider a $3,507 land claim for the Union Pacific underpass on Second Street. The claim follows condemnation appraisals by district court commissioners and covers value and damage to the property. a later report on grade-change damages of $1,307 will be discussed.

More than a half dozen people escaped serious injury when two cars collided at the Highway 49 intersection near the east west road past No school house. A Dodge driven east by David Carson of Topeka Kansas collided with a Pontiac sedan driven north by Charles W. Seyler of Topeka. The Seyler car overturned. Carson’s car went into a ditch. No one was seriously hurt. several sustained minor bruises and cuts.
About 75 attendees gathered in the court house to hear Rev. C. S. Nusbaum of Wichita discuss Christianity vs Townsend Plan. The speaker traveled on after the session and planned to attend the next regular meeting at 7 30 o clock Tuesday night.
Lawrence police raided North Lawrence restaurants and lunch spots Saturday night and ordered all venues to stop serving beer by midnight after Mayor Lawrence received complaints. Three arrests were made at Bridge Street two restaurants and a dance hall, with two beer samples taken at a dance hall. Sheriff Vogler visited county spots after midnight but no arrests occurred. Officials noted beers tested contained up to six percent alcohol, with higher content than the 3.2 percent Kansas standard. courts would decide what constitutes intoxicating beer.
Dr. Frank Herron Smith of Berkeley told First Methodist Church that economic ties may prevent war with Japan, noting U S and Japan depend on each other's goods. He observed Japan's imports include cotton oil machinery and manufactured articles, while praising national sacrifice and progress funded by loans, road building, ships, and trains. He said communism is weaker than 25 years ago and dismissed fears of fascism spreading in Japan.

A bolt struck the southeast tower of Plymouth Congregational Church, sparking a two hour blaze that burned under composition shingles. Firefighters from two stations battled interior and exterior flames, using a canvas bucket and rope safety, while crowds watched along Vermont and nearby streets.
The Zeppelin Hindenburg progressed over the North Atlantic on its second transatlantic flight. The Lawrence high school band, weary yet proud, arrived in Cleveland after earning a superior rating in the national band contest, placing second in its division. Directors cited sight reading as the weakness. several soloists and a woodwind quintet earned high marks and a $200 Interlochen scholarship was won by a member. A late arrival and split schedules disrupted solo performances. the band traveled home on a special train reaching Kansas City after further delays.
