Three Perish in Whisky Truck Fire in Philadelphia
A whisky laden truck crash killed two mothers and two women companions in northeast Philadelphia. Victims were Mrs Helen Benner Roy Perkins the driver and Harold Perkins Roys brother. Benner identified by husband Thomas. Truck struck a sedan grazed a taxi and knocked over a fire plug and trolley pole igniting a house and church but firemen stopped spread. Truck was en route from a local warehouse to Elizabeth New Jersey.

Army appropriations bill signed into law in peace time

About two dozen goodwill ambassadors from the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce visited Lawrence for a dinner meeting arranged by the local Chamber at the Eldridge Hotel. Colorado Springs now maintains the Pike's Peak auto highway, funded by the city with the forest service handling work. the tolls are removed and the route through Pike National Forest is open to the public. The 18 mile ascent will require a forestry department safety inspection for permission. The group toured as part of a 2,188 mile goodwill trip extending to Des Moines and western Kansas. Lawrence figures included Henry Asher and Dr. W. L. Burdick. Mayor L. K. VanHorn spoke of Manitou Springs’ name change to highlight local mineral springs. A June Old West celebration for the highway opening was previewed by Tompkins, with Dr. G. B. Gilmore among the guests.

Humming Prisoner Confesses Bank Robbery in Wichita
Joe Weigand, 23, of Valley Center Kansas, confessed to robbing the Valley Center State Bank of 454 dollars yesterday. He was captured on a Dodge City bound bus less than two hours after the hold up and told officers he staged the crime to cover worthless checks. He cited drinking before the holdup and said he would have escaped with one more drink. He has a wife and a 4 year old daughter in Newton. At the county jail he hummed as he described the crime and his motive. He kept most of the cash except 2.98 spent on a bus ticket.
