Fence Rises on 12th Street Under New Screening Ordinance

A pale-green fence along the north side of 12th Street screens Ray's Garage & Salvage from nearby homes, a result of the city commission's January screening ordinance. Fatal crash near 31st and Haskell corrected in Journal World

Sheriff's reports show a vehicle driven by Stephen Burgess sat sideways on a county road south of the intersection. James LeClair, a Haskell Junior College student, was killed outside the car when two other vehicles crashed at the scene. Herbert Harrs drove the car that struck Burgess, and Lawrence Frey then hit Harrs. Frey was initially misidentified as the striker.

Housing project complaints aired at Edgewood Homes

The Lawrence city Human Relations Commission heard Edgewood Tenants Assn complaints about Edgewood public housing at 1600 Haskell Ave. The HRC urged action but noted it has no direct control of the housing project.
