400 taking cruise to Cuba

Four hundred luxury liner passengers headed to Cuba on the first American tourist cruise since 1961. Dizzy Gillespie and Early Hines aboard the Daphne will perform in Havana during a 36 hour stay and visit sites including Hemingway’s home. A bomb threat was reported but found to be harmless.

Bennett signs liquor tax bill in Kansas

Gov. Robert F. Bennett signed a clean up measure raising spirits gallonage tax to 2.50 per gallon to fund alcoholism treatment programs. The 1977 session also included a 50 percent hike on beer wine and liquor, with other rates outlined for wine and low alcohol products.

Hartman Receives Air Force Commendation Medal

1st Lt. Robert D. Hartman, son of Herbert A. Hartman of Lawrence, was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal at George AFB California for meritorious service in the Far East. He is officer in charge of munitions maintenance and storage and now serves with a Tactical Air Command unit at George.

KU cited over oil spill burn at 27th Street site

Lawrence fire officials said a citation for illegal burning linked to cleanup after an estimated 5000 gallon oil spill at KU was expected today or Tuesday. EPA investigators planned to complete their review later this week and decide on penalties for possible violations.

KU to Name Acting Director for Gerontology Center

Del Shankel says an acting director for the Kansas University gerontology center could be appointed this week. A KU faculty member will hold the post after a Wednesday meeting with a candidate. The center will operate from Lawrence and Kansas City campuses and coordinates research on aging issues set up by the Kansas Board of Regents earlier this year.

Man Struck by City Truck Injures Lawrence Resident

An 80 year old Lawrence man, George D. Wilson of 1721 Kent Terrace, was injured Friday when struck by a city maintenance truck at North Second and Elm. He received a left elbow abrasion and was treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Wilson said he slipped on a pipe while crossing the street. driver Kerry L. Pierce remained at the scene and the truck was undamaged.

The Something for everyone event drew crowds at South Park with varied activities. Linda Land offered dime a time kisses while Kansas University student David Reisman painted rainbows on Kennedy Wright.
