Bill Boswell of 932 Ark St was elected Second District adjutant at the Second District American Legion convention in Lola. Lindley Brien presided, with Dorsey Liberty commander Jack Tatum and 16 others attending. The Dorsey Liberty post won the Ezra Campbell trophy for community service, an honor held the prior four years by Overland Park. Ernie Klooz was elected a delegate to the national convention in Portland, Ore. Local membership reached 1,000 with 43 new memberships.

A gift of $8,000 from Mrs. Albert C. Espentaub brings Baker University pledges to $25,000 for a new Musical Arts Building to be planned by Wilson and Company of Salina. Construction bids may be taken in September with a fall start. remodeling Parmenter Hall and Rice Auditorium projected at $50,000 each. The two story building will adjoin Rice Auditorium and Parmenter Hall and include a 130 seat multi purpose room, a 16 by 32 foot stage, twelve practice rooms, six studios and a large rehearsal area.

At Least 28 Miners Die In Welsh Mine Blast
A gas explosion in a Rhondda Valley coal mine killed at least 28 miners. About 80 men were inside when the blast hit the Cambrian colliery near TonyPandy, 18 miles north of Cardiff. The 28 bodies were recovered from a collapsed gallery hours later.

Dog Show Sets Records at Lawrence Kennel Club Event
The 10th annual Lawrence Jayhawk Kennel Club Dog Show drew 1,500 to 2,000 attendees at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. A field of 756 dogs from 23 states and Canada competed, ranking among the country’s top 20 shows. Best in Show went to Champion Cappoquin Carriage Trade, a miniature poodle from Minneapolis.

Two persons were injured in a two car collision Sunday about 2 10 p m at Tee Pee Junction north of the city on U S 59. Howard Hobbs 61 of Klamath Falls Ore sustained a broken pelvis and cuts and bruises Artie Hobbs 58 suffered a broken knee. Bill B Klaver 22 of Kingman a Kansas University student drove the other car and Judy Wells 20 of 1632 Engel Rd was a passenger both uninjured. Damage to the cars was estimated at 700.

KU Near Miss As Fire Arrow Warning Targets Fraser Hall
Lawrence Kansas University police and traffic officers received a call warning of a planned arson attack on Fraser Hall using flaming arrows. A watchman and two KU officers guarded the building, and no incident occurred. Police also reported goldfish found in the Chi Omega fountain at 1 30 a m Sunday. About 150 people attended an open house at the Lawrence Public Schools Administration Center at 2017 La St to tour the new facility completed in March.
