Kansas University students and faculty hear that the Class of 1991 plans a $5,000 gift to establish a general lecture fund funded by voluntary dues. Ann Eversole notes growth potential to reach the $10,000 endowment goal, funding only interest for speakers.
Kansas University Medical Center appeals to the Kansas Board of Regents to write off 8.4 million dollars in uncollectible bills the largest such amount in years. The plan covers 10,729 hospital accounts and ties to broader budget and fee changes for KU and four regents universities.
Lawrence Memorial Hospital trustees heard a hopeful report on the Employee Medical Benefit Trust. Strathmann cited reduced claims in early 1990s, a two week hold on payments, and a $90,000 borrowing before adding the trust funds may repay. The pension plan valued at $6.3 million earned 11.37 percent, with investments advised as 30 percent stocks, 60 percent bonds, 10 percent short term.
Sen. Bob Dole appointed Bob Martin Haskell Indian Junior College president to a 23 member Advisory Committee on the White House Conference on Indian Education. Martin, a Cherokee Nation member, will gather input from Haskell stakeholders and tribal representatives to shape federal education recommendations.
