Baldwin attendant Rudy Larson 28 was shoved down stairs during an armed robbery at Ballew's Service Station Friday. He was treated for a lower back injury at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and held overnight. the motive and suspect remain at large. The robber described as a white male in his 20s, six foot one or two, over 200 pounds, long brown hair, clean shaven, wearing multicolored bib overalls and dirty white tennis shoes. Na poleon Bell Sr., 40, of Olathe, pleaded guilty to a reduced second degree murder charge in the shooting death of Leslie H. Duncan, 22. Duncan was killed March 28 in an argument over a parked car, Bell originally faced first degree murder.
Roy F. Bailey 88 former editor and general manager of the Salina Journal died in a Salina nursing home. Bailey led the Journal from 1911 to 1949 after starting in Emporia on the Republican and later working for William Allen White on the Emporia Gazette.
The Lawrence United Fund board will begin visitations to agencies Monday to assess programs and needs for the 1971 campaign. Budget requests will follow to the UF budget hearing group led by Keith Lawton and Lynn Anderson, guiding the drive quota. Agencies to be visited include Some Day Nursery Social Service League Salvation Army Legal Aid Society and Red Cross.
A Ford County firefighter, Thomas Cox, 32, of Dodge City, was killed when the emergency vehicle he rode in swerved to avoid a car at a Dodge City intersection and overturned. Another firefighter, Mike Nail, 26, was injured and remained in intensive care at a Dodge City hospital.
President Anwar Sadat moved to tighten control over his government after a power struggle with a ministerial faction. Thousands in Cairo rallied in support as the six ministers were placed under house arrest and a judiciary committee began probing alleged irregularities. Sadat unveiled a new 35 member cabinet and vowed free elections for the ASU leadership.
Counter demonstrators plan peaceful actions at military sites today while service members veterans and civilians protest the day the planners call the glorification of war. Major troop movements include 200 riot trained soldiers from the 6th Armored Cavalry sent from Fort Meade to Fort Dix as a precaution.
A Lawrence man arrested Friday for shoplifting hypodermic needles posted 3500 bond for a Wednesday court appearance. He also faces illegal possession of marijuana and felonious assault after allegedly pulling a knife on Lynn Schneider at Raney's Drug Store. Schneider escaped injury. The report notes marijuana found during a search. In county court, James Weiss, 18, Spring Hill, received six months in jail and a $100 fine after pleading guilty to petty theft for taking a television from Gibson's. Weiss had been charged with grand theft.
