Polaris Missile Accepted By City for Display in Park
Lawrence becomes the first US municipality to receive a Polaris missile on permanent display after City Commission approval of a Navy gift. Capt. Richard D. Gruber arranged the donation, with the Navy transporting the 28.5 foot, four foot diameter missile from Charleston, South Carolina. The city will build a base costing about $1,000. site not yet chosen, likely one of the city parks.

At J M Kring farm half a mile west of Pleasant Grove a noon fire destroyed a chicken house conversion killing three registered sows and two litters of pigs. No one was home. Ray Sumner notified authorities. Building valued at 3,500 with livestock around 350. Cause under review, heating lamp suspected. Undersheriff Rex Johnson attributed ownership to Kring and his son Lynn. Fire department responded with a water tank.

Roswell New Mexico. A hospital patient who says he is 112 years old lists his 22 children among visitors, including Bobby Coronado, 10. Coronado claims birth on Christmas Day 1851 in Corpus Christi Texas. He says he lost his birth certificate in a fire and has been married three times, current wife Eudelia born 1915. They wed in 1930. 17 children, two dead. Doctor says he is healthier than many age 60 individuals. He had worked as a gardener two to three days weekly before hospitalization.

Replacement Is Named At KU For Capt Gruber
Captain Robert H. Eslinger Jr. will join Kansas University this summer to replace Captain Richard D. Gruber as professor of Naval Science. Gruber departs in June for Washington DC to study at the Defense Language Institute before serving as naval attaché in Belgrade Yugoslavia. Eslinger, a Parsons native and former KU student, currently attends the Naval War College in Newport Rhode Island and plans to move to Lawrence once housing is secured. He previously served at Pensacola Naval Air Station and in the 108th patrol squadron as a gunnery officer, among other assignments. A 26 year old Lawrence man Eliseo H Rodrigues was reported in fair condition at Kansas University Medical Center after a two car collision near DeSoto on K 10 just before 11 p m Tuesday. The Floray car driven by Alvin P Floray Sr 60 of Leavenworth crashed head on, killing Floray and injuring passenger Helen Honeycutt 43 also of Leavenworth.

Lawrence firefighters were called to Sigma Alpha Epsilon at 1301 W Campus Rd for a grease fire in the fraternity kitchen at 10 54 this morning. The blaze caused only minor smoke damage in the kitchen area according to firemen.
