Alaska gold claim could fund Georgia student’s college plans
Steve Deakins, 20, and Ed Bowers own a gold claim near Anchorage after staking it during trips through Alaska and the Yukon. Deakins will work the claim for about 42 months, hoping to finance geology studies in Georgia then return to Alaska. The pair plan to build a cabin and says claim jumpers are not an issue. Deakins, son of a Marietta minister, left Osborne High to pursue the venture after an offer to help in Anchorage.
