Kansas University students honored for high class standing and campus leadership across 28 honor societies. Nine named to Mortar Board Sachem Owl Society and numerous others elected to Alpha Delta Sigma, Delta Phi, Phi Alpha Theta and more, reflecting top seniors and juniors from Lawrence and surrounding areas.
Seattle climbers Dick McGowan and Fred Beckey slept seven hours in a 26 below zero cold storage locker with 30 mph winds to test sleeping bags for a Himalayan ascent. McGowan said the setup would have been “just like home” aside from the fish odor.
A quirky note outlines a dopey bureau cover and a proposed magazine titled Bad Housekeeping. It pledges informative pieces on dishes, dressmaking, decor, and even games from coffee klatch to bingo. Household Finance Corp won a Kansas charter with branches planned in Wichita Salina Manhattan Lawrence Leavenworth Kansas City Hutchinson Topeka Coffeyville executive secretary E R Zook said no formal notice yet. Mary Louise Patton elected Vassar drama society vice president and to direct Shakespeare's Tempest at Barn Theater Augusta Michigan this summer. She has prior drama school study in Denver. Hurricanes Hazel and Carol in 1954 killed 168 people.

Obituaries report the deaths of Mrs Alta Williams 71, Edward Connor 75, Thomas Black 80 and Robert L Sack Thomas 34, with service details, burial plans and surviving relatives. Mrs Williams died at home on Elm Street. services at St James AME Church, burial Oak Hill Cemetery, body lying in state at Bowser Lee Mortuary. Connor died at his son’s home in Kansas City with services planned there. Black’s arrangements pending. he previously worked for Kennedy Plumbing. Robert G Thomas of Kansas City died in Chicago while at the Palmer House for a National Restaurant Association convention. survived by wife Edith and two daughters, plus parents.
New York government filed a civil antitrust suit against six major publishing and advertising associations accusing them of conspiring to restrain national advertisers from using direct media copy without agencies and to fix agency commission rates. Richard W. Slocum, president of the American Newspaper Publishers Assn., called the suit a waste of taxpayers' money aimed at public history and an injunction against any arm of the press.

A minor parked-car collision occurred Wednesday in front of Beta Theta I Fraternity on M29 Tenn St. Fred W. Zoellner, 18, Tongitoxie, parked his vehicle which rolled into the street, hitting Delbert Myers, 22, of 1050 Ohio St. Myers’ car sustained $30 in damage while Zoellner’s incurred minor damage. Three additional minor crashes happened that evening. no injuries reported.
