Progress in Kansas lead pipe fight gains federal funding
Alexandra Middlewood notes Kansas has about 158000 lead pipes due to historic mining areas and cites a national study showing high blood lead levels in Kansas children. The EPA allocates 28.6 million from the 2021 infrastructure bill to replace pipes, aiming for nationwide complete replacement by 2033, with bipartisan support but limited congressional backing.

Is the union resurgence real and does it matter to workers
Veronique de Rugy argues that reported union gains amid a pro union administration may overstate a renaissance. While strikes and notable deals occurred, union membership as a share of workers has fallen since 1967, and public sector unions dominate. Higher wages come with higher plant closures and slower job growth, suggesting limited net benefit for most workers.

School House Fire at Central Public School
From the May 11 1899 Lawrence Daily Journal report a fire discovered at 9 30 am in the Central public school building near the furnace caused smoke to issue from basement windows. Firemen and janitor Will Morris ensured all pupils left safely while furniture and piano were moved out. Officer Sam Jeans and fire fighters checked the building. A separate note recalls Billy Hughes being thrown from a buggy after a bicycle startled his horses on Massachusetts Street.
