Lawrence district adopts tuition plan for transfer students

After months of debate the Lawrence school board approved a transfer student policy requiring neighboring districts to pay tuition unless agreeing to student swaps. The plan allows foreign exchange students tuition-free and offers locals a tax-based discount. The board also reorganized the fine arts staff and approved budget items, construction updates, awards, and personnel changes.

KU Sets Sights on Graduation and Spring Commencement

KU plans 104th spring commencement May 24 at Memorial Stadium with remarks by Chancellor Archie Dykes Gov. Robert Bennett and Regent Jess Stewart. Report says safe control of nuclear waste feasible

Washington AP report states that managing radioactive waste from increased nuclear energy is feasible. The Energy Resources Council chair, Commerce Secretary Elliott Richardson, says risks can be lowered though not eliminated, while NRDC critic Tom Cochran warns history does not favor such optimism amid past disposal failures.

Remodeling costs to be estimated for county courthouse

Douglas County will learn by month end the cost of remodeling the courthouse. Architects Peters Williams Kubota expect an official estimate by May end with possible total near 760000. Roof repairs may be needed and slate deterioration is under study.

Board OKs Busing Plan Expansion and Policy Revision

The district accepts an expanded busing contract with R W Harmon and Sons to add six buses at a projected $4,445.75 monthly rise, totaling about $40,000 for the year plus fuel costs. A plan guaranteeing shorter ride times was narrowly defeated, and a first reading on a revised transportation policy was approved. Fund drive ends Arts center nets 35000

Lawrence Arts Center furthers renovation with a final fundraising total of 35000 announced after a May 1 end date. Additional gifts and a hoped 5000 Douglas County grant could push the total beyond 40000. Center plans summer work on a performance hall and art spaces while Ann Evans takes a one year leave to London.

KUAC delays action on student ticket discount proposal

The Kansas University Athletic Corp board postponed decision on a $4 student discount for next year’s season football and basketball tickets. The proposal, backed by student body president Tedde Tasheff, aims for a $31 combined price but faces doubt from committee members as votes were to be telephoned in after an overnight consideration. Groundbreaking for the O’Connell Youth Ranch site is planned for Thursday at 9 a.m. with related private events in Lawrence noted.
