Labor Department details show a 6 minute rise to 39.2 hours in the average factory work week in April with manufacturing employment steady at 15.5 million. Unemployment fell by 533000 to 4.962 million while long term joblessness rose by 266000. Construction added 217000 jobs despite bad weather.
Washington AP A Justice Department official urged Congress to legalize telephone wiretapping by federal and state police and to admit wiretap evidence in criminal trials while demanding safeguards against privacy invasion. He said current laws are intolerable and separate controls on other eavesdropping devices should be considered.
Mae J. Hays 83 died Wednesday at Valley View Rest Home. Services Friday at Methodist Church Blue Rapids with burial in Fairmont Cemetery. Survivors include daughter Vivian Pishny and three sons Wendell Jay and Ray Hays. Kevin Stanley infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Stanley died Tuesday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. graveside services today at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Funeral services were held in Palo Alto for Mrs. Georgene W. Learnard 89 who died Tuesday. Burial followed at Alta Mesa Cemetery. A Lawrence native and Kansas University graduate she belonged to Kappa Kappa Gamma. She lived in East Palo Alto 16 years. Survivors: son Harry P. Learnard Seattle. daughters Mary Jane Learnard San Francisco and Mrs. L E Appleby Palo Alto. grandsons Patrick and David Appleby Palo Alto.
Mrs Emma Allison former resident of Lawrence died today in Topeka. She was the widow of the late Rev Oscar E Allison previously pastor of the First Methodist Church from 1942 to 1952. Funeral services are set for 3 p m Friday at the Methodist Home Chapel in Topeka.
Four Kansas University Greek organizations will canvass Lawrence Saturday morning for a door to door Multiple Sclerosis drive from 8 30 a m to noon. The four groups work with the Douglas County Branch of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society directed by Walter Sandelius and Ruth Quinlan.
Four Lawrence High School students won prizes at a French poetry recitation contest held at Kansas State University. Taught by Mrs. Mary Mahieu, the winners include Nini Garrett first year first place, Byron Leonard second year first place, Wynne Goff second place, and Jeremy Paretsky third year third place.
The Associated Press reports near record flood crests pressing levees in the Midwest flood belt. Six Illinois counties faced disaster designation as floodwaters threaten Southern Illinois and other states. 25 deaths and over 100 injured, with 1,250 families displaced. National Guard deployed. Osage Basin and Missouri River Valley under water acres. Weather otherwise milder with storms on coasts and tornado activity in South Carolina.
Lawrence reports Bert Coan of KU football broke a leg in practice and will have surgery Friday morning. He is expected to need at least four months to recover. Messages of support can be sent to Room 319 D, KU Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas.
The 32nd degree of Lawrence Consistory of Scottish Rite Masonry was conferred Wednesday night on 12 members of the 125th reunion class at the Masonic Temple. The group chose the name of Dr. O Wright Class in memory of the late secretary of the Scottish Rite bodies. Officers elected were Fred R. Cox president David L. Ryther orator and Ellis W. King secretary treasurer. A banquet will be held May 17 with Maj. Martin J Cleminski speaking on Your Loss If Communism Spreads.
The First Christian Church held its annual congregational dinner meeting with new officers elected. The General Board includes elders, deacons, and deaconesses for three year terms with a third elected yearly.
Memorial Hospital lists admissions including Dr. W C Nelson and Edith Wulfkuhle in Tecumseh, Edith Beach in Ala, Joyce Farner in Tennessee, Marcia Robbins in Marion, and others. Dismissals include Carla Manlove, Joseph Raybern, Sarah Schelbar, Harold Brady, Jeanette Bagwell with baby, Sandra Emasters with baby, Leonard Levens, Carolyn Kelly with baby, and Virginia Miller among multiple entries. several births noted for the Jordan and Rob- families.
Among the 54 players on Army's 1962 football roster, 25 are residents of Pennsylvania. The breakdown highlights a strong Pennsylvania presence in the squad.
Kansas University Business School awarded scholarships and honors at the annual Business Day banquet in the Kansas Union. Recipients included David E. Wenger and notable juniors and seniors from multiple Kansas cities, with awards from Goodyear Foundation, Grater University Fund, Boeing, Phi Chi Theta, Chi Omega, Alpha Kappa Psi, Delta Sigma Pi, and the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award.
Two 16 year old Lawrence youths James H. Johnson and Louis Zieske face breaking and entering and grand larceny charges after admitting to the B and G Hosiery robbery. They allegedly took 701.56 in cash and 176.73 in checks, with 187.62 cash recovered. The suspects bought two 1940 cars for 375 total.
The Tonganoxie Alumni Association will host its annual dinner dance at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Tonganoxie High School Auditorium. Dinner is by the Reno Ladies. The senior class of 1961 will be honored and the class of 1936 marks its 25th reunion. Tickets are available at local businesses or through alumni officers.
The Kansas University Environmental Health Research Laboratory gains a 17578 grant from the U S Public Health Service to cover 17500 for construction and fixed equipment and 78 for movable gear. Dr Ross McKinney says the matched funds will speed operation with contracts set this summer and full program running by fall with up to master’s researchers. The lab studies water treatment waste processing air pollution and radiological health within the Nuclear Reactor Building housing Kansas first permanent reactor.
Illinois couple Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Larsen of Beecher City were stranded briefly when their 1959 car burned at a roadside park at the U.S. 40 and Robert Steele Highway intersection. The fire, likely from a shorted power seat, destroyed the vehicle and scorched belongings, including a $1,000 bond and $200 in cash. The Larsons were treated in Lawrence and then flew to Kansas City for a return trip home.
President and Mrs Kennedy depart from Andrews in a military jet for Palm Beach Florida for a long weekend of relaxation in the resort city. They will stay until late Sunday before returning to Washington.

A Kansas study may assess a joint Missouri Kansas four lane highway along the state line south of Kansas City. Gov. Anderson said no decision yet and a decision next week is likely. The plan splits costs 50 percent federal, 25 percent Missouri and 25 percent Kansas.
Linwood Grade School will host a visitation day for six year olds before January 1, 1962. The event starts at 8 30 a m on Friday May 19. Children may ride the bus with parents picking up at noon or 11 30 if lunch is not taken. Free lunch is available if desired.
Owner Earl E. Barons announces a two day grand opening at the new Spudnut Shop located at 1422 West 23rd Street. Free Spudnuts and coffee will be served to visitors during the event. The Spudnut formula originated in Salt Lake City and expanded from a single shop in 1946 to a national and international chain.
