Sales tax plan eyed to fund health care expansion
Lawrence and Douglas County officials floated an $8.4 million expansion for the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department Bert Nash Center and Douglas County Visiting Nurses. A one cent countywide sales tax could finance the plan plus parks and a new jail, with property tax relief aiding school district plans for a second high school. Valley View Care Home vacancy looms as the board weighs site moves for the Visiting Nurses near the hospital complex.

Cable firms unsure of new FCC rule impact on rates
Sunflower Cablevision serving about 25 000 subscribers in Douglas County expects little effect from FCC rules starting Sunday. Manager Dennis Knipfer notes rates have been low and a 7 percent countrywide reduction may not apply locally. He cites $18.50 basic service, $20.23 with taxes, and foresees no change to remote control fees or hookup charges. The company will decide in coming weeks how rates adjust while maintaining service value.

Survey on high school bond support questioned by board
A high school bond survey, showing 59 percent voted in the 1990 referendum and 57 percent of voters supporting the bond, was labeled invalid by board member Tom Murray-Murray for misrepresenting community backing. KU professor Maynard-Moody urged caution in interpretation citing bandwagon recall effects. Board member Renee Karr suggested adding a city map to identify where support is strongest and weakest. Maynard-Moody will estimate costs for such a map. the district paid him 6785 dollars.
