Cool cloudy conditions slowed crop progress and frost damaged fruits and vegetables, while wheat showed slow growth and lodging. Western third of the state saw heavy abandonment though prospects for above average yields remained. oats and barley were seeded, sorghums attracted interest, corn planting was light, and potatoes suffered seed rotting with fields washed by rains up to 1.5 inches in the northeast and north central counties.

Pvt Jack Gibler Dies in Bougainville War Service
Private Jack Riley Gibler aged 19 died of wounds from Bougainville combat on April 25 1944. Telegram to his parents Mr and Mrs Eugene Gibler 111 New Jersey street said he enlisted in the Kansas National Guard at 14 and left in 1940 for Camp Robinson Arkansas. He served overseas two years and three months and held staff sergeant rank at seventeen before reverting to private. He attended Clinton and Lawrence Junior High and served in Australia New Caledonia Guadalcanal Fiji and Bougainville.

Ghost Ship Crashes After Four Hour Flight Near Denison
Denison Iowa May 10 A four engine bomber from the Sioux City Army base circled two states for four hours with no one aboard before crashing two miles northwest of Denison on a ravine. Sixteen people on board were not aboard. ten crew and a bombardier had bailed out last night as fire broke out. The crash occurred near Belden and Wayne Nebraska after the crew escaped without serious injuries. Residents near Carroll heard the plane circling shortly after midnight and feared a crash due to its low altitude.
