Omaha May 1 President Roosevelt emphatically states he will not be a candidate for the presidency. He says there are no strings on this statement and will not accept any compromise bills from Congress. He spoke in Denver about railroad legislation and railroad relief for the people.
The Star reports May 10 that directors have secured the Shirinian interest in Kansas City Southern. Stuart B. Katt will retire as president. Nell W. will be succeeded by J. A. Winson, now general manager of the Clnemonts, Hamilton Gayton Railway. Kansas farmer convicted.
Accused grocer John Beyer found guilty after trials in police and district courts. He plans to appeal to the supreme court. The retired farmer faces a minimum sentence of thirty days in jail and a fine.
Sag Harbor reports the arrest of former Peconic Bank cashier Francis H Palmer over an alleged $41 600 shortage in his accounts. Police say the case stems from a May 10 release with details tied to the ongoing investigation and bank records review.
Leavenworth May 10 Miller Gray Frank Lee and James Rawlins Uegra pushers escaped from the county jail by crawling through a bore cut in the east wall of the cell house. The escape went unnoticed until an unwilling prisoner raised the alarm. They created the hole with two old tools and dumped plaster in the sewer, stacking their escape gear under a blanket.
Sanctions at Port Angeles uncover inflate invoices used by Yokohama and other exporters to evade duties. Officials seize thousands of dollars worth of goods and store them in the local custom house and warehouses as intensified inspections begin.

Topeka May 10 Congressman Reeder of the sixth district says the government irrigation experiment at Garden City cannot proceed. He argues landowners must contract with the government to take water, else the Interior Department will abandon the project. He notes the law says the test should cost the government nothing and compares the contract to a mortgage, forecasting farmer reluctance and possible project failure.
In Chicago on May 1, both sides urged peace and order during the teamsters strike. A strikers committee prepared a peace proposition asking the president to act as arbitrator, proposing changes to labor and management representation. Police prepared a precautionary guard around the depot as troops stood by in Illinois.

Topeka May 11 The board of directors of the state penitentiary met yesterday at Lansing to adopt civil service rules governing that institution as required by law passed last winter The rules drafted may be changed on minor details before final adoption No county can have more than its pro rata share of jobs at the prison determined by population Guards and other personnel must pass physical and educational examinations.
In Hunniwell Kansas May le year old son of Q M Akers principal of the Hunniwell schools was smothered to death in an elevator wheat bin. The child jumped into a bin filled with wheat and sank from sight. life was extinct when the body was recovered.
Kansas City May 10 The jury in Justice Jenney court yesterday found A L Knight not guilty after a one minute deliberation on charges of selling liquor on Sunday.
No further deaths occurred today among the injured from the Marquette tornado. Funeral services began today and will continue for the next two or three days as the community copes with the disaster.
Secretary Wilson and Department of Agriculture officials will tour the Southwest to inspect agricultural development. They will join Rock Island representatives in Chicago and depart by special train for Memphis, Little Rock, Oklahoma City, and Kansas stops including Herington and McPherson. A public meeting is planned in each city.
A violent windstorm swept St Joseph and Elwood causing structural damage. The Harram Company grain elevator at Elwood Kansas partially collapsed killing John Galby and Harry Smith and injuring others. John Chambers was fatally involved in the disaster as the Starraun grain elevator fell.
Fraternal Aid Association reelected officers during a brief business meeting. Present executive officials conducted the election in an orderly session held at an early period, with harmonious results reported by attendees.
Marion Kansas May 1 9 County commissioners uncovered irregularities totaling about 300 in boiler rooms lining accounts for J A Rog er of Newtown and others. County clerk J H Thrasher resigned after being charged with false accounts while Thrasher and Moyer faced the probe. McIntosh and Woodheater now lead the clerk's office.
The fortieth annual State Sunday School association session started at the auditorium in Nutchinson Kansas with expected attendance over 1500 delegates. Opening night featured welcoming addresses followed by the president’s address by Rev K Pile of Parsons and a talk by Pref W C Pearce of Chicago. Music was led by Isaac St Meredith of New York. The convention continues through Thursday.
A St. Petersburg dispatch says the Russian cruisers Almas and Jemtehug of Voelkersam's division have evaded Japan and reached Vladivostok. Other items note a New York court denying an injunction against Equitable Life on its amended charter mutualization, Jentching and Rion at St James, and Chinese merchants opposing a new exclusion treaty in discussions with the United States.

The funeral of Mr. George M. Esterly who died in Massillon Ohio will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 oclock from the home of his son Dr George A Esterly on East Lee Street. The son had gone east to meet his mother who will arrive with the body and they will reach Lawrence tomorrow.
Pastor Th. Jones of North Lawrence Baptist church faced a failed resignation as the congregation chose to keep him. He has offers from Second Baptist in Hutchinson and Lexington but has not decided, possibly staying in Lawrence. Also, thieves stole a pony, saddle, and bridle from Cromwell Trucker’s stable. Pansy plants for sale advertised by Mrs Brookelsky. Kansas baseball team traveled to Topeka to face Washburn College.
