Judge rules against landlords in Lawrence zoning case
District Court Judge Mark Simpson ruled in favor of the City of Lawrence against a landlords group challenging the city housing nondiscrimination ordinance. The court found the ordinance not unconstitutionally vague, not preempted by federal law, and lacking standing to claim Fourth Amendment violations. The amended petition was dismissed. The decision also noted the definition of source of income is understandable and that landlords may consider criminal conduct, not income, when renting.

A coalition supporting commuting the sentence of Sarah Gonzales McLinn 19 at the time of the 2014 Lawrence killing will host public information meetings May 20 at the Lawrence Public Library auditorium and May 22 at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library auditorium. They say the victim Harold Hal Lasko subjected McLinn to months of abuse. McLinn is serving a hard 25 sentence after a 2021 resentencing that replaced an original 50 year term. The sessions run 6 to 8 p.m. and are open to the public but not suitable for children.
