Leawood couple endows KU speech research professorship
A $1 million gift from Fred and Virginia Merrill funds a KU professorship in speech research, with Mabel Rice to become the first endowed chair holder. Rice notes that specific language impairment hinders some children, affecting communication and social interaction, though many outgrow the issue. The Merrill Center at KU, part of the Schiefelbusch Institute, was established in 1990 and links scholars from multiple disciplines. Virginia Merrill, KU alumna, earned a degree in speech correction. Fred Merrill chairs Cereal Food Processors Inc. in Mission Woods.
