KUMC doctors save part of girl’s leg in rare surgery
Five year old Nicole Andrewson of Wichita underwent rotationplasty at Kansas University Medical Center to save her leg while treating aggressive Ewing’s sarcoma. The procedure involved removing the diseased thigh and reattaching the remaining limb after rotation, with a prosthetic leg to follow in weeks. Nicole woke feisty after a 74 hour operation and faces physical therapy to use her ankle as a knee joint. Her family hopes she will one day wrestle and play football as she recovers.
