Second Suspect Nabbed In Kaw Valley Bank Robbery Case
Sheriff Jack Dunkley announced Tony Rose of Parker Kansas is in Douglas County jail as the second man sought in the March 9 Kaw Valley State Bank robbery in Eudora. Ray Camarata already faces charges and was held since April in Douglas County jail. Rose was captured at a farmhouse east of Osawatomie after an anonymous tip led Chief J E Johnston to the suspect. Prosecution of Camarata will proceed once Rose is processed, with County Attorney R B Stevens naming George K Melvin as assistant prosecutor. Lawmen planned to bring Mr and Mrs W C Mercier and Miss Henrietta Schubert of Eudora for identification. the Merciers were held by masked bandits at their home before the bank crime. The robbers stole about $3700 from the bank vault and escaped, leaving hostages chained inside. Rose offered no resistance and requested transport directly to Lawrence.

Private airlines relieved the army of air mail duties on four routes today with more to follow under last week’s contracts. United Air Line carried 1,200 pounds of mail from Newark to Oakland, five passengers, as army air corps ended its run on the northern transcontinental route with a 14 hour 15 minute flight from Oakland to Newark.
