U S Population Growth May Stall Says Economist
Washington May 8 AP At least one government economist believes the United States population may never rise above 170 million. Dr C E Baker of the agriculture department told a group of the International Chamber of Commerce that unless birth rates rise or immigration laws are loosened the population in 30 years could stagnate below 170 million. He cited 1930 census figures showing over 120 million and argued cities lack enough young children per 1000 women to sustain growth, while rural areas have a small surplus and declining birth rates.
