The Agriculture Department on May 1 estimated winter wheat production at 652.902 million bushels, up from 644.0 million predicted three months earlier, with 604.237 million harvested last year and 547.427 million in the 1925-29 average. May 1 condition stood at 90.3 percent of normal, above 81.6 a month prior, and 84.0 a year ago. Harvestable winter wheat area was 49.482 million acres, with 41.993 million acres sown last fall, reflecting 3.7 percent abandonment versus 10.9 percent last year and 12.2 percent 10-year average. Rye to be harvested totaled 3.793 million acres, abandonment at 7.3 percent. Hay condition May 1 was 79.4 percent of normal, with 9.796 million tons of hay on farms May 1, down from 12.376 million last year. Pasture condition May 1 was 78.8 percent of normal, vs 77.3 a year ago and 81.9 percent 10-year average.
