Freshman Held in Slashing Assault at Fort Hays
Fort Hays State College freshman David F. Paxton of Hopewell was jailed on an assault with intent to commit a felony charge after a 64 year old housemother, Mrs. Nita Rice, was beaten and slashed in the Men’s Residence Hall. Rice, in serious condition at Hadley Memorial Hospital, reported a man attacked her at 1:30 am. Paxton was arrested in his dorm room after bloody clothing bearing his name was found near a dorm incinerator. Rice is the widow of former Hays physician Dr. C F Bice.

A Minnesota family of seven the Zrusts from Silver Lake vanished December 29 and prompted a nationwide search. They were located safe in Reno Nevada where Earl Zrust a building contractor had been working as a bricklayer. The sheriff said a finance company traced the family to Reno via a car loan.
