Woman beaten at Eldridge hotel leads to assault charges
Evanston woman Ellen Faust, 47, was beaten with a plastic radio during a late Saturday assault at the Eldridge hotel in Lawrence. Lee Elwood Croy, 23, of Lawrence, faced charges including assault with intent to kill, with police saying the attack occurred between 10 p.m. and midnight. Faust's condition was listed as good in Lawrence Memorial Hospital, despite head and neck injuries and possible skull fractures. Croy was arrested at the bus station early Sunday and denied involvement.

Albuquerque May 7 The air force launched an investigation into a giant B-36 bomber crash at Kirtland Air Force Base. Twenty three men died with two survivors in critical condition at Sandia hospital. The bomber, from Carswell AFB, crashed after wingtip hit the runway, tearing a propeller and right engine pod.

Britain to Follow UN Decree on embargo of strategic materials
In London a labor government spokesman signaled Britain would cut off exports of strategic materials if the United Nations orders it. An American UN spokesman said the U S delegation will seek a 12 nation sanctions committee embargo. Censure Father for Moving Sick Drafted Son
A board of army officers censured a father, John Amborski, for moving his son Pvt Stanley J. Amborski 21 from Fort Leonard Wood Missouri to Chicago after claiming inadequate care. The soldier was driven 450 miles to Great Lakes Naval Station hospital where he was diagnosed with pneumonia and fever. His condition later improved to very good.
