High car speeds with safety soon forecast by engineer
New York May 7 AP high confinement center ridged highways urged to boost safe speeds. Maxwell Halsey traffic engineer National Bureau of Casualty and Surety Underwriters argues higher comfortable speeds will rise by about ten miles per hour but unsafe design of intersections and straightaways blocks safety. Proposals include raised center strips three and four lane highways with outside smooth cement and inside rough macadam to guide traffic, wider shoulders, and channelized islands at wide intersections to curb risky left turns.
