Senior oral health gaps in Medicare and care access
Medicare offers no dental coverage for Original Medicare, leaving many seniors in Kansas without preventive or restorative care. Enrollment in Medicare Advantage grows but can be costly. A 2012 Elder Smiles survey shows half of Kansans in retirement facilities hadn’t seen a dentist, and many lack insurance. In Lawrence, 12.2 percent of adults 65+ have no natural teeth, higher in two nearby tracts. Experts urge recognizing mouth health as body health and note staff turnover and arthritis hinder seniors’ daily dental care.
