Alva Flory Barn Destroyed by Fire
A large barn on the Alva Flory farm 11 miles southwest of Lawrence burned Thursday night starting around 5 p.m. A hammer mill grinding feed caused the blaze. Neighbors aided with bucket lines as there was no local fire equipment. The 42 by 76 foot barn with a six‑ bay loft and stored grain and farm equipment were only partially insured. Cows were moved to a relative’s farm and two of Flory’s sons helped save 19 head of cattle. Replacement costs estimated up to 50 000 dollars for the barn alone.
