Clark rails against choosing sides in neutrality fight
Washington May 6 Senator Clark of Missouri warned against any policy that would force the United States to pick sides before war. He opposed amendments by Senators Thomas and Pittman and argued that the nation should not abandon neutrality as the Senate debates new sanctions and arms embargo rules. He praised parts of Pittman’s bill but said it would bind the country to Britain and France and Japan if enacted.

Senator Bankhead and Senator Lucas forecast strong southern support. Senator Russell notes only three appropriations committee members opposed major increases including parity payments and removal of farm surpluses. Secretary Wallace warned about offsetting treasury costs and proposed a processing tax. About 6 million farmers, or 85 percent of farm families, would share in payments.
