Exemption Fees Allow Smoking At Kansas City Kan B
Kansas City Kan businesses pay a 250 dollar exemption to keep smoking in bars and restaurants. Of 316 licensed venues, 69 have bought exemptions through 2011, including Sammy’s Tavern and Johnny’s Sports Bar. Some nonfood establishments also bought exemptions, while others advocate against loopholes. Leaders warn exemptions risk undermining the ban and call for tighter limits.

Kansas program redirects unused meds to safety net clinics
A Kansas plan approved in 2008 allows adult care homes and clinics to receive donated unused prescription drugs from mail order pharmacies and care facilities. The effort, joining 37 states with similar laws, began with a $250,000 donation from Prescription Solutions of Overland Park and aims to stock about 36 clinics in 30 cities. Strong safety rules govern the process, including tamperproof packaging, patient data removal, pharmacist checks, and prohibitions on donations by individuals. Kansas senators and pharmacists praise the program as a way to help uninsured residents while reducing waste, with projected annual donations around a quarter of a million dollars.
