Doctors urge FDA to approve nonprescription Plan B
Four prominent physicians from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists urged regulators to resist political pressure and approve Plan B for over the counter sale. They cited safety, lack of overdose potential, and effectiveness in preventing unintended pregnancy and abortion. Barr Laboratories expects a decision by May 21 amid delays linked to teen-use data. Emergency contraception remains about 89 percent effective within 72 hours of intercourse, but access is a challenge for many women.
