Education Board Rejects Bids On Hillcrest Project

Lawrence Board of Education rejected all bids for an addi tion and remodeling at Hillcrest School in a 4 to 2 vote citing bids above the architect's estimate of 98500. The board called for cost-cutting figures at a special meeting Friday afternoon.

Business School Day Events Start Tonight

George Michale of Pro vident Mutual Life Insurance Co Kansas City will speak at 6 45 tonight in the Big Eight Room at Kansas Union. He is a Million Dollar Club member whose $1 million in sales tops. Harry Shaffer KU associate professor of economics follows at 10 30 a.m. Wednesday in Room 408 Sumnerfield Hall to discuss US and Soviet economic systems.

Wellsville Soldier among Turtle Creek drowning victims

Fort Riley officials released the names of three soldiers who drowned in the Turtle Creek area over the weekend. Spec. 5 William Hennessey, 22, of Wellsville Kansas, Pfc. Carl D. Halde, 18, of Cheyenne Wells Colorado, and Pfc. Karry G. Griffin, 18, of Beaumont Texas, were lost while swimming near Turtle Creek Dam.

Browne to Speak at Lawrence High School Baccalaureate

R Edwin Browne of Kansas University will give the baccalaureate sermon at Lawrence High School in the LHS gymnasium at 4 p.m. Sunday May 23. Browne an KU professor and broadcaster with leadership roles in church and education groups. About 515 students are to graduate. graduation will be May 28 at Allen Fieldhouse.

Tragic Drowning of Local Fisherman Swiger Near Kaw River

David Swiger of West Virginia drowned while swimming to cool off on a hot afternoon near the Kaw River dam. Witnesses include Bennett and Mrs Shirley Wilson and George Schlecty who summoned help. Swiger's body was recovered about 6 p.m. as crowds watched. funeral services are set for Friday at Rumsey Funeral Home with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Miss Kansas Crown Goes To Coed Catherine Bergstrom

Catherine Bergstrom of Kansas City was named Miss Kansas to fill the term of Margene Savage who was killed in a traffic accident near Emporia. Bergstrom, KU senior and 1964 Miss Lawrence KU, will serve through June and plans a career in public relations after a Europe tour.

New Wilt Alcindor to enroll at UCLA in fall

Lew Alcindor 7-1 high school star from Power Memorial in New York announced plans to enroll at UCLA this fall. He narrowed his choice to UCLA or St. John’s and said he could play with UCLA’s national champions after watching them on TV.

Douglas County Deputies Get Monthly Salary Increases

The Douglas County Commission approved a $30 per month raise for deputy sheriffs and the undersheriff, with unanimous support from Commission Chairman Walter Kampschroeder. A fulltime secretary for the sheriff’s office was also approved, while four additional deputies were not acted upon. Starting pay rises to $375 with staged increases to $430 for deputies and $480 for the undersheriff, Sheriff Rex Johnson hailed the action as helping retain current officers and hire capable staff in the future.

Pastor Norman Steffen Named To Lead New University Lutheran Church

Rev. Norman Steffen of Davis California will serve as pastor of the new University Lutheran Church Missouri Synod on a five acre tract near 15th and Iowa Streets in Lawrence. He will be installed May 23 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He and his wife Kathryn plus four children will move to Lawrence, and Steffen will work with KU students until construction is finished. He previously served 11 years in a Lutheran parish in Davis and has been active in Red Cross and family service programs.

Deer Sightings and Local Updates Across Lawrence

A Lawrence resident spotted three white tail deer near his west Lawrence yard this morning as two adults and a younger deer passed by. In other news Arthur W. Hoyt of Topeka drove on the Kansas Turnpike 18 miles west of Lawrence when a second deer was killed Sunday. no injuries were reported. KU sit-in protesters face District Court jury trial

Three Kansas University students Elbert Rinkel Pamela Smith and Walter Bgoya were scheduled for a May 17 District Court jury trial for the March 8 sit-in at Chancellor Wescoe’s office. A total of 110 protesters were charged with staying past closing time and suspended then reinstated.
