More than 1,000 captains and majors at Ft. Leavenworth attended a three day Staff and Command College symposium on officer responsibility. Generals led discussions on balancing integrity with obedience while facing Vietnam era reputational and budget pressures.
Judges begin the May term in Douglas County District Court calling 510 cases. Judge Frank Gray in Division T has 260 civil and 22 criminal cases while Judge James Paddock in Division II has 209 civil and 19 criminal cases. New terms start May November February. Cases are reviewed to set hearings or grant continuances as many civil matters move term to term until dismissal or settlement.
The Fraternal Order of Police presented Lawrence Police Chief Richard Stanwix with a 10 item petition seeking a $150 monthly raise and a $20 cleaning allowance for officers among budget items while requesting non budget items such as free parking near the station faster promotions and FOP members on hiring boards. City Manager Buford Watson will review and final answers await a later meeting.
South Vietnam reports 103000 enlisted men and NCOs released to return home from Da Nang area. About 6000 ARVN officers remain in reeducation camps near Dien Ban. 900 officers are housed at one camp as a CBS/AP visit documents. Camp life appears austere with a public address system and mixed views on resuming military careers.
Kansas University's 38th Midwestern Music and Art Camp resumes with Wiley as guest conductor. The camp keeps Robert Foster in leadership while welcoming veteran staff and new divisions across journalism visual arts and performance for 1000 plus enrollment prospects.
The head of the Episcopal Church may face formal charges after an ecclesiastical court found Presiding Bishop John M. Allin in contempt for failing to appear as a witness in the trial of Rev. William A. Wendt. The ruling questions church authority and canon law, as the case centers on the ordination of 11 women and bishops' ruling on their validity.
Gov. Robert F. Bennett said the fight over planned repairs to the Governor’s Mansion has hurt morale at Cedar Crest and harmed him politically, while his wife Olivia has received profane calls. He noted the requests originated with the state architect’s office, not the Bennetts, and said they faced potential repercussions for seeking the appropriation.
