Senator McCumber declares a wartime mobilization aim to enlist five million men within twelve months. He argues the scale is necessary to sustain national defense and accelerate victory, urging coordinated recruitment and industrial support nationwide.
Senator McCumber urged five million troops in the coming year and accused the shipping board of wasting war efforts while criticizing the aircraft program as overconfident. Secretary Baker detailed an immediate war need of about fifteen billion dollars for all arms, citing production bottlenecks and a successful Liberty motor push. Hearings resume Monday as the house committee prepares to report next week.
Subscriptions to the Third Liberty Loan in the Tenth Federal Reserve District totaled about 148.4 million dollars by April 30, slightly below the stated district quota but exceeding it by nearly 20 million. All seven states except Colorado and Oklahoma surpassed their individual quotas, with Denver and Wichita yet to report fully.
The annual patrons meeting of the city schools will be held at First Presbyterian church this evening as part of School Week. Mrs Clara Kanaga reports the safe arrival of her son Lieut Clinton W Kanaga in England where he serves as a debarkation officer. Miss Vivian Stringe visited Camp Funston this evening for a weekend trip.
J Frank Wilder of Troy and Lawrence died after a long illness at Social Service hospital. Born 1837 in Vermont he helped found Wilder Brothers in the West, served on the city council and in the Baptist church. He moved to California to visit his daughter Mrs McCurdy. funeral planned from the Baptist church with Rev Frank Jennings.
The French forces advanced yesterday between Hailes and Castel southeast of Amiens. They captured Hill 2 and the area near the Avre river, with gains reported around Villers-Bretonneux on the Amiens front per the war office.
Fair tonight and Saturday with no major changes expected. Sunday shows similar temperatures with little variation as the weekend ends.
Topeka May 3 A movement seeks to extend the terms of county officials who also serve on draft boards to avoid a renomination election. Proponents argue the draft system functions best with current board members who know cases and avoid reeducation of new officers. The plan, backed by the International Sheriffs and Peace Officers association, aims to Washington to secure action before fall campaigns.
Fire department battled two minor blazes. One fire damaged a city hall roof caused by a plumber’s blow torch while the second fire at 1012 Tennessee street involved a chicken house owned by J. Robertson and occupied by G. C. Wolf, with about $100 damage.
Lawrence organizers declare tomorrow as Dental Clinic Tag Day to raise funds for a public school dental clinic. High school students will staff the sale on Lavrence streets, with dentists donating two half days weekly to treat needy pupils at no cost. The effort aims to fix teeth, improve health, and boost student performance, funded entirely by tag purchases.
The salvage committee of the University will collect salvage for the Red Cross tomorrow morning. All kinds of salable junk will be picked up from front porches in Lawrence between Ninth and Seventeenth streets and Mississippi and Massachusetts streets by 10 o'clock. Residents outside the district may place items on porches with a notice and telephone number for pickup.
City officials urge residents to participate in a tag day on the fourth Saturday to raise funds for the Lawrence DP Public Schools dental clinic. Mayor Geo L. Kreeck asks citizens to welcome the opportunity to support this health initiative and buy tags freely.
Washington May 8 A call for 6207 skilled men for the national army was issued by Provost Marshal General Crowder. All states are included except New Jersey the movement of the men on May 17. Four from Douglas Topeka May 3 two hundred fifty men with educational and mechanical qualifications to be called into service by Kansas draft boards. They will be sent to the State Agricultural College and other schools for summer courses for future military service next fall. Twenty counties of the state are not called upon for many men in this draft.
Reports that Ed Stover was killed or wounded in France are unfounded. In Lawrence, family and friends have heard no word of such an event. The tale likely sprang from a letter describing Tor Mason’s narrow escape after a shell struck his billet, killing his bunk mate, while Mason had gone uptown. The bombardment forced the company kitchen to move three times in one afternoon.
Lawrence High School enters nine athletes in the fifteenth annual interscholastic state track and field meet at McCook Field tomorrow afternoon. Dope on Winfield suggests their team may pose the toughest challenge. McPherson, Valley Falls, Topeka, Kansas City and Marquette also field strong squads among Class A entrants. Souvenir buttons and medals will be awarded. cups may reward meet records and top point winners.
French and English forces bolster momentum in a joint advance as initial gains are reported on the front. Commanders coordinate operations to widen the breach and secure early territorial progress amid shifting tactical positions.
French forces under Petain attacked east of Amiens driving Germans from Hill 82, a 250 foot eminence near the Ovre river. The Haskell Indians, led by Captain Bates and Coach Shields, face Kansas City Polytechnic tomorrow in a cautious showdown. After uneven tryouts, Patissant and Left Hand posted slow mile and vault results, while a fast relay that beat William Jewell last winter struggled in practice. Bates did clock a 10 second century as a bright sign for a possible points finish.
