The LA riot toll climbed to 40 dead and nearly 2,000 injured after three days of violence. Federal troops and National Guard were deployed, with security forces patrolling streets as fires, looting, and clashes continued amid a city haunted by unrest following police brutality verdicts.
President Bush vowed to use whatever force is necessary to end the unrest in Los Angeles after the Rodney King trial sparked deadly rioting. He spoke from Camp David while troops and National Guard were deployed, urging calm and a focus on justice and national unity.
More than 200 gathered for a peaceful vigil in Lawrence to respond to the Rodney King verdict, singing We Shall Overcome while tensions linger over Gregory Sevier's 1991 shooting. Speakers from city and Kansas University called for action as authorities face ongoing scrutiny of police.
