President orders federal troops to riot torn LA

Los Angeles faced the worst urban rioting since the 1960s as National Guard troops and police moved in to reclaim neighborhoods. President Bush placed 4,000 Army troops on standby and 1,000 federal officers in LA while curfews limited looting. At least 27 killed, 1,235 injured, 3,000 arrested, and property damage over 200 million.

City official urges open talks to ensure fair hearings

Assistant City Manager Rod Bremby warned Lawrence must keep communication lines open so residents can voice concerns about possible inequities in the legal system. Douglas County jobless rate slips to 2.6 percent in March

Douglas County unemployment fell to 2.6 percent in March the lowest since 1989 based on Kansas Department of Human Resources figures. The March rate drops from 3.0 percent in February and compares with 3.6 percent statewide. Job gains occurred in manufacturing wholesale and retail trade and services, while government employment fell by 200 jobs.
