City to deploy automated side-loader trash trucks citywide

The city uses 14 standard trucks but has two automated units. one is in service and the other used for driver training. Pruett estimates eight fully automated trucks are needed for residential collection, with curbside recycling starting in October 2014 using the same fleet. Three new trucks have been ordered for recycling, each costing about $90,000 more than traditional units, and each carries a single driver. The program aims to reduce heavy lifting and injuries, though some attrition may trim staff temporarily. Residents may see trucks on streets twice daily due to single-side pickup, and routes are being tweaked while keeping collection days unchanged. Residents are asked to have trash out by 7 a.m. and carts three feet from obstructions.
