County delays plan to fund school nurses via tax hike

Douglas County commissioners consider delaying a May 12 vote on financing a school nursing program with property taxes. Charles Jones urges a six month study and a special committee to examine funding, with districts potentially sharing up to $1 million next school year. McElhaney and Johnson show hesitation while Ortiz warns of urgent need as Lawrence schools face nurse cuts. Other actions include backing land transfer for the South Lawrence Trafficway and issuing bonds to refinance $9.43 million in debt, saving $214,000.
