Mercantile Bank Deal With Firstar Creates Giant US Bank
The planned merger would form the 13th largest U S bank holding company with assets over 75 billion and deposits of 59 billion. Firstar would absorb Mercantile via a tax free exchange of 2091 Firstar shares per Mercantile share valuing Mercantile at 66 per share, about 21.6 times 1999 earnings. The combined firm would run 1200 branches from Milwaukee and Cincinnati and St Louis as investment hubs.
