Amtrak started operation at 12:01 a.m. carrying 182 trains across 314 cities on 21 routes. The government backed system consolidates rail passenger service, replacing 178 defunct or reorganized trains amid losses of about 200 million dollars yearly.
Washington braces for antiwar actions as hundreds of troops and police prepare near the Potomac. Defense transfers 519th Military Police Battalion to Ft Myer and 7,300 police and National Guardsmen stand ready to prevent traffic disruptions at 21 key points. Demonstrators run rock concerts to swell crowds ahead of Monday and Tuesday protests. About 1,500 campers gathered near the Tidal Basin by the Lincoln Memorial.
More than 150 passenger trains were retired as Amtrak took over. Trains such as the Wabash Cannon Ball and Nancy Hanks ceased operation, with some lines adding cars for nostalgia crowds and special observances marking the end of an era.

Douglas County commissioners voted to end general assistance welfare for able bodied adults aged 18 to 40 without children. Chair Arthur Heck said the move targets abuses while costs rise, noting aid to the blind, disabled, and aged remains untouched.
