Ireland to Loose British Control
Dublin May 1 President Eamon de Valera announced a proposed constitution that would make Ireland a sovereign independent democratic state. The document contemplates a possible union with Northern Ireland, proclaims Eire as the nation’s name and Gaelic as the dominant language, and envisions a seven year term president with a taoiseach heading the cabinet. The London press greeted the move skeptically. In a separate item, a U.S. government declaration of taking seeks 802 acres near San Francisco for coast defense guns, with landowners asking $400 an acre.
