County Appraiser Marion Johnson said about 1,800 residents filed appeals by Friday with many more expected in Monday's mail. He projected around 2,000 total as foot traffic increased, and noted hearings will run through April with a May 15 deadline.
A Lawrence man will be going to a number of movies this year. Bryan Frey is the first place winner in the Journal-World's Oscar prediction contest. Frey picked the correct winner in 11 of the 12 categories. He will receive 52 movie passes and a framed movie poster. Courtnne Bridges and Carmen Hocking, both of Lawrence, each will receive six movie passes. They and a number of other entrants tied by picking 10 of the 12 categories correctly. Bridges' and Hocking's names were selected in a drawing.
Douglas County Clerk Patty Jaimes reported Friday that advance voting for the general election rose to 685 by Friday afternoon, up from 394 at the same point in the February primary. Weather reduced turnout in February, and voting continues at the county courthouse with hours today morning and Monday morning.
