Self-defense argument rejected in fatal shooting
A Douglas County judge bound Steven A. Drake III over for trial on first degree murder after finding pre shooting text messages showed possible premeditation in the fatal 2017 shooting of Bryce Holladay at Drake’s Lawrence home. Drake, 21, disputed the murder charge saying deadly force was necessary as Holladay refused to leave and fought others. The decision followed testimony noting inconsistencies and a toxicology report that found no drugs in Holladay’s system. The case proceeds to trial with a date set for April 10 at the next court appearance.
