Arbor Day efforts and Sunflower Plant layoffs in 1986 Lawrence

In 1986 Lawrence residents planned Arbor Day tree plantings in Burcham Park with 30 new cottonless cottonwood saplings replacing 33 trees damaged by vandalism. The Cottonwood 4-H Club donated 140 toward replacements and a Tree City U.S.A. flag was raised near City Hall for the city’s tree care achievements. Separately, Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant faces major staffing cuts with 775 layoffs between June and next January, plus 749 already planned, while about 150 staff remain to maintain the site in layaway status for mobilization readiness.
