Dolphins to clear mines at Umm Qasr port
Two Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphins Makai and Tacoma have been flown to the Iraqi port of Umm Qasr to help detect and clear mines in shipping lanes as humanitarian aid resumes to southern Iraq. Navy officials say the dolphins are trained to avoid mines and pose little risk to themselves. local dolphins may oppose the intrusion, potentially complicating operations. The use of marine mammals dates to the 1960s with continued roles in mine detection and escort duties.
